The Daniel football team defeated South Pointe 50-49 in double overtime Friday night to advance in the state playoffs.  After falling behind early, the Lions came back twice to force overtime as regulation ended in a 35-35 tie.

Both teams scored a touchdown and extra point in the first overtime and then South Pointe scored on its next possession to go ahead 49-42.  When the Lions put a TD on the board during their turn with the ball, they were faced with the option of a kick or a two-point conversion try.

A kicked extra point would have set up another overtime, but Coach Fruster and his staff sent the offense back on the field to go for the two-points. Tyler Venables made a three yard run that barely stretched over the goal line to get the score, leaving South Pointe and their home crowd stunned.

The win sets the Lions up against Wren at Singleton Field on Friday night.  Wren upset A.C. Flora to give them a rematch against Daniel.  A victory Friday would send the Lions to the upper state finals, so make plans now to come out and support the team.  Kickoff is at 7:30 PM.  Go Lions.
